Telstra has announced a major shift in its media strategy that will see the telecommunications giant stop streaming live Australian Football League (AFL) and National Rugby League (NRL) matches and instead offer its customers discounted access to Kayo Sports.
The Australian company has agreed a long-term partnership with Foxtel's sports subscription streaming service, which will effectively replace Telstra Live Pass in both the AFL Live App and NRL Official App, providing fans with live, ad-free coverage of every game from both leagues.
Both apps will continue to be powered by Telstra, which will remain in its role as a major sponsor of the AFL and NRL.
As part of the agreement, Live Pass subscribers will be offered AUS$20 (US$15.26) off Kayo's basic monthly package, meaning they can access the service for AUS$5 (US$3.82) a month for a year. All other Telstra customers will be offered a AUS$10 (US$7.63) discount.
The offer will provide Telstra customers with access to every game of every round of the AFL and NRL regular seasons, as well as coverage of more than 50 local and international sports across all platforms and devices.

'We have created a great product in Kayo, streaming 50 sports live including the AFL and NRL action, it's exciting for Kayo to be endorsed for Live Pass customers by Telstra.'
Telstra said its strategy shift is a result of ‘the ongoing evolution of the sports streaming industry', as well as an Australian broadcast rights landscape that ‘has changed dramatically' since Live Pass was launched on mobile devices in 2014.
'We laid the foundation for sports streaming in Australia with Live Pass back in 2012,' added Telstra chief executive Andrew Penn. 'Today, video streaming of content is everywhere. How and where viewers consume their content and their expectations have changed greatly in this time.
'We have always been committed to delivering fans the best experience possible across our range of products and services, and sports is a key part of our strategy and offering. While Live Pass has provided a great experience for our customers over time, Kayo has quickly become the premium sports streaming service in Australia, and we're excited to provide this exclusive offer to our customers, giving them the chance to watch a wider range of sports on their choice of screen.'
